Raspberry Pi: A $30 AppleTV
Sections
Tired of Apple’s constraints on all of its hardware? Have $30 dollars to spare? If so, you may want to consider buying yourself a shiny new Raspberry Pi and installing Raspbmc to set up your own Apple TV. Here’s what you need to get started:
Raspberry Pi w/ 4 GB minimum SD card HDMI Cable Ethernet Connection (optional but recommended) Simply connect the SD Card, install the highly configurable OS, and load it onto your Raspberry Pi for wireless streaming among all of your iOS devices. You can buy a homeplug that allows you to use wired connection through the electrical outlets in your home, or just opt for wireless connection (only recommended if you have Google Fiber). This Linux computer allows you to view photos from your iPad Mini, use the TV as an additional monitor from your Macbook Pro, or simply play music from your iPhone 5S.
And, of course, if something like this can work for Apple devices, you know there’s gotta be a way to do it on Android, too. One of the many Google Play store apps can enable similar functionality for Android.
